The Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk has opened along the city’s eponymous thoroughfare, colorfully balancing Old World styles with San Antonio’s contemporary verve. Conceived as a natural extension of the Texas city, the hotel integrates a Civil War-era Alamo Fish Market building, whose historical details—like limestone walls and a cistern—were preserved by a powerhouse design team including Gensler, MARKZEFF, and Lake|Flato.

“Our design for the Canopy hotel is all about reflecting that special Riverwalk atmosphere and its layers of history,” says Lake|Flato associate partner Lewis McNeel. “We worked hard to amplify and extend its unique qualities, beckoning you up into the actual canopy of those gorgeous towering cypress trees and drawing you in alongside those old stone walls.”

The hotel’s color palette draws upon motifs of the surrounding neighborhood to instill a sense of place. Onsite F&B options include Domingo, which features a grand riverfront dining court, and Otro Bar, which is attached to an open air-terrace on the hotel’s third floor.

Spanning a total of 2,300 square feet, the flexible meeting and event space also reinforces the hotel’s surroundings with floor-to-ceiling windows, an open terrace, and abundant natural light. In addition to signature canopy beds, all 195 accommodations boast balconies positioned to immerse guests in the trees and river views. Guestrooms were also thoughtfully crafted with artwork and textiles inspired by the city. An intricate black and white tile pattern appears in the showers—recalling the classic San Antonio quatrefoil logo that honors the city’s four pillars: People, Pride, Passion, and Promise.

McNeel, a San Antonio native, adds, “Like downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk itself, we wanted to design a hotel that would lodge in the imaginations of visitors and be a place where we locals could feel deeply immersed in our own authentic hometown atmosphere.”
