Slated to open this summer in the Texas capital, tommie Austin, a JdV by Hyatt hotel, will debut alongside the adjoined Thompson Austin as part of a forthcoming mixed-use project. A heartfelt reimagining of the lifestyle hotel experience, tommie Austin will accommodate modern travelers with simple onsite essentials while encouraging visitors to explore the city. Studio Collective is designing the boutique concept to evoke a unique, autonomous visual identity influenced by the colors and materials of West Texas—from the artwork of Donald Judd to the noble aesthetic of Marfa.

“We wanted to harness these regional, environmental, and artistic revelations in our own work to evoke a strong sense of place,” says Christian Schulz, partner and designer at Studio Collective. “We also looked at some of the indigenous objects and craft-making for our regionally inspired palette; drawing inspiration from local Native American patterns and textures, which allowed our design to celebrate some of the areas vibrant cultural expression through modern applications.”

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a mural curated by Tom Jean Webb that echoes the Southwestern ethos of the design. A hip coffee shop and wine bar, Coffee Co, will serve as a key social hub in the lobby as well. Located on the fourth floor, the pool deck and outdoor event spaces will reflect the influence of the region’s biodiversity through the layering of local vegetation of unique fire and water elements.

The 193 king guestrooms will embody flexibility and infuse a tactility that recalls Lone Star landscapes. Bold geometric patterns will further reflect the influence of nature along with six panoramic images shot by local photographer Kenny Braun installed above the headboards. “We wanted the rooms to feel functional and packed with character,” adds Roosevelt Gulino, Studio Collective senior designer and project design lead for tommie Austin. “Comfy and tactile furnishings, alongside softly patinaed finish elements will evoke a timeless feel with an air of creativity. Ultimately, the tommie will provide guests with many memorable touchpoints through a ‘handmade modern’ experience with which to feel relaxed and inspired.”
