Palisociety has announced the opening of its second Pacific Northwest property, Hotel Grand Stark, in the Central Eastside neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The new outpost occupies a four-story structure originally constructed in 1908 that previously served as the Hotel Chamberlain as well as a furniture manufacturing hub. Palisociety founder Avi Brosh partnered with locally based North 45 Projects on the redesign of the historic site, which welcomes visitors with a stylish, laidback authenticity.

“At the Hotel Grand Stark, we wanted to create a vibe that is identifiably Northwestern, but without the kitsch,” Brosh says. “I wanted to stay true to our signature quirky Palisociety style, but pay extra attention to be unpretentious and quietly luxe at the same time.”

A communal lobby welcomes guests with a gallery-inspired sensibility—complete with a neutral backdrop and curated artwork animating the walls. Custom furnishings and vintage pieces intermingle throughout the interior spaces, which are lined with original hardwood floors and white-washed walls. Abundant natural light and tall ceilings instill a sense of levity, while industrial-style lighting and contemporary lounge seating arrangements promote interaction.

A separate coworking area, dubbed Study Hall, is located beyond the front desk and also doubles as a private dining or event space. The bright and casual Grand Stark Deli is also featured in the lobby, and Bar Chamberlain will join the onsite F&B lineup later this summer.

All 57 guestrooms are housed across three floors and share a bright, airy ambiance accented by light blue walls and the building’s original light wood floors. A playful combination of millwork, textiles, and patterns are layered throughout each accommodation, mixing florals with tartans and wovens to add multidimensional personality, while vintage rugs and custom lighting compose a residential-like flair.

Hotel Grand Stark marks Palisociety’s second 2021 opening—following the March debut of Palihouse Santa Barbara.
