Spread across 3,400 square feet in the base of an 11-story commercial highrise, the Freshman is the newest culinary experience to open in the Washington, DC suburb of Arlington, Virginia. DC-based design firm //3877 conceived the restaurant to easily transition between day and night, functioning as a coffee shop by day and a cocktail bar after sunset.

Upon entering the sunny concept, guests are greeted by a colorful 50-foot mural by local artist Miss Shev Love, which pays tribute to java lovers with references to global coffee destinations like El Salvador, Morocco, and Guatemala. The coffee station at the front of the horseshoe-shaped bar also heralds visitors. More than 20 stools wrapped in navy blue upholstery accent the concrete bar, and complement the interior palette of deep blues, green, and polished concrete floors. Mustard and butternut yellow details at the bar offset the cooler tones of the design, which are illuminated by dark brass pendants.

The wood-clad dining room is populated by rustic walnut tables paired with antique brown leather chairs and banquettes, while high-top communal tables with gray seating and a small lounge area provide alternative dining options. A 50-seat patio is located along the front of the building as well.

“We are so excited about the Freshman,” says //3877 cofounder and principal David Tracz. “[Founder Nick Freshman] has pulled together an amazing team that provides great food. We really feel like the space helps to bring the whole experience together.”
