The Albatroz Hotel in Cascais, Portugal has revealed a comprehensive refresh courtesy of local firm Viterbo Interior Design. Considered “the grand dame of the Portuguese coast,” the boutique hotel has been revived with a timeless opulence inspired by 1940s and ’50s style. A refreshed color palette anchored in azure tones was conceived to evoke a fluid, easygoing sensibility.

“There was, in a way, an intention to gravitate to that golden era, leaving a sense of timelessness in each room, but actually reinterpreting it with a fresh touch,” says Gracinha Viterbo, who helms the eponymous design firm. “An endless collection of blues flows all around—spreading a mood for rest and detachment of everyday life. Times stops there, and an invitation to letting go begins.”

Tiled surfaces distinguish the Albatroz Hotel’s many convivial public spaces, while custom art installations by a medley of contemporary artists animate the refined design with hand-drawn murals adorning hallways and a large tapestry punctuating the stairways. Hand-embroidered and natural linens conceptualized by Viterbo’s specialized atelier also wrap interiors to further showcase Portuguese artisanry. The atelier also created the hotel bar’s bespoke patchworked tabletops and mirrors made from traditional Portuguese baskets. “The design of the hotel is really a homage to Portuguese craft,” Viterbo adds.
