Old World charm merge with modern style at the forthcoming Hudson Whaler Hotel in Hudson, New York. Slated to open later this month, the historic property was refurbished by New York-based designer Harry Heissmann to showcase a contemporary ethos with respect to the site’s heritage. An array of locally sourced artwork will further instill a strong sense of place.

“We wanted to create a destination that illuminates Hudson’s maritime history, as well as the town’s lively spirit,” Heissmann says. “Thoughtful design details softly imitate the home of a ship captain, while also incorporating the contemporary style today’s travelers seek.”

The original handcrafted grand staircase serves as the main focal point of the warm, inviting lobby. Reminiscent of a ship captain’s living room, the space is lined with ornate, custom woodwork and anchored by a custom fireplace. An elaborate mural of the Hudson River by Ron Genereux also animates the lobby and juxtaposes the wall carpentry. Overhead, a vintage Italian crystal chandelier casts a refined light across the interior, while an outdoor courtyard offers respite among the natural scenery. Dark blue tones adorn the hallways to complement the dialogue of blue and white at play in all 16 suites. Plus, large windows support an airiness in each accommodation, while chic carpeting, fireplaces, and custom whaling vessel wallpaper nod to the legacy of Hudson.
