The much-anticipated Ace Hotel Brooklyn has opened in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn, New York. Housed within a 13-story concrete structure, the new property was designed by Roman and Williams and Stonehill Taylor worked as the project’s architect. The hotel’s interior design calls to mind the raw art studios of European modernists and is populated by a slew of soothing and stylish custom furnishings.

“After seven years, we are proud to unveil one of our most comprehensive architectural and interior commissions to date for Ace Hotel Brooklyn, our third collaboration with Ace Hotel,” Roman and Williams founders and principals Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch say. “We aimed to embrace a solid muscular design vocabulary, employing confident lasting construction methods and materials—ones with gravity and strength. A primitive modernist philosophy guided us, it is expressed in the tactile spirit of the design.”

Comprising metal, glass, and precast concrete, the stark façade celebrates the natural beauty of its materiality, which complements a custom ceramic mural by American sculptor Stan Bitters that serves as the exterior’s centerpiece. A sculptural light installation by Roman and Williams also boosts curb appeal.

In addition to concrete, textural elements like Douglas fir, oak, plywood, and leather line Ace Hotel Brooklyn’s public spaces, including the lobby, where custom and vintage furniture intermingle. The bar, clad with an original wall sculpture by Verdan Jakšić and a large drawing by Tara Geer, serves as a key focal point. Plus, an onsite art gallery further instills a tasteful sense of place.

Each of the 287 accommodations echo Le Corbusier’s Le Cabanon workspace, crafted akin to cabins for creative refuge. Elegant and efficient, guestrooms are punctuated by minimalist fixtures, raw handcrafted materials, and a robust in-room art program curated by artist Niki Tsukamoto that features original textiles and fiber pieces from nearly two dozen artists.

“From the building’s strong and unadorned façade, to the celebration of raw old growth timber in the public screens, to the honest plywood furniture collection in the bedrooms, we aspire to be as energetic and untamed as Brooklyn itself,” Standefer and Alesch add.
