Hirsch Bedner Associates Los Angeles (HBA) has designed the public spaces at the Springwoods Club Palm Tree Hotel in Geyuan, Guangdong, China. The luxe narrative entices all five senses as it draws inspiration from Eastern philosophies and the natural landscapes of the setting to instill calm.

“The design brief was to utilize the natural beauty of the lake and surrounding topography as our muse to create serene environments and an overall respite from hectic city life,” says HBA Los Angeles partner Kathleen Dauber. “There is a transformative moment when the morning mist enveloping the lake and scenery clears, revealing the setting’s radiance and tranquility. We embraced the emotion felt in that sense of discovery in writing the narrative of this project’s design.”

Layered symmetry characterizes the new public areas, which showcase a palette of wood and stone. Wooden beams line the ceilings, while sculpted archways punctuate the voluminous lobby and lounge with a Mediterranean-style ethos. Floor-to-ceiling windows cast natural light upon several seating vignettes distinguished by custom pieces composed of carved wood and stone and organic forms. Backlit glass screens line the perimeter of the ballroom ceiling to illuminate structural columns and wood paneling that establishes intimacy. The hotel’s sauna room is lined with cedar and is equipped with a Himalayan salt installation that serves as a key focal point. Finally, the outdoor dining patio is accented with textural wood walls that frame idyllic views of nature.
