The Ameswell Hotel has opened as a new independent tech-focused property in the heart of Mountain View, California. The design-driven hotel was crafted by San Francisco-based practice BAMO to celebrate California’s inspiring wilderness and Silicon Valley’s legacy of innovation.

Among the hotel’s key influences were the nearby NASA Ames Research Center as well as the artwork of German artist Kurt Schwitters, the latter of which informed the materiality. “I was drawn to the idea of this kinetic relationship between horizontal and vertical surfaces, and the layout of our building attributed nicely to this concept,” says BAMO principal Michael Booth.

The long linear ground floor is enlivened with an abundance of artwork set against white drywall and arranged in various vertical angles to establish dimensional intrigue. “Suspended wood panels fabricated from recycled wood float throughout the space, defining seating areas or forcing perspectives throughout the free-flowing plan,” Booth adds.

The hotel’s signature eatery, Roger, is defined by a gridded motif and an oversized bar with garage-style doors that bond the indoors and outdoors. Casual all-day concept Flyby is located in the lobby, while the Airstream Bar is housed within a retrofitted vintage trailer. Additional amenities include a wellness wing, heated saltwater swimming pool, a 1,600-square-foot fitness center, and more than 15,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor event and meeting space.

The hotel’s 255 spacious accommodations are clad with floor-to-ceiling windows that illuminate statement wallcoverings, notes of poppy orange, and rich black walnut finishes. The materiality and color palette instill a casual flair and a sense of place as they form a backdrop for elements like custom desks that recall the form of an airplane wing. In the bathrooms, custom lighting is also installed along with locally handcrafted blue fireclay tiles.
