Mondrian has further expanded its European footprint with the launch of the Mondrian Shoreditch London. The 120-room urban retreat was crafted by locally based firm Goddard Littlefair to reflect the creative culture of the East London neighborhood, while also echoing the energetic and playful DNA of the Mondrian brand. “We delved deep into the history of the area and the characters that create the colorful social fabric of Shoreditch,” explains Goddard Littlefair director and cofounder Jo Littlefair.

The traditional nursery rhyme “Oranges and Lemons” also served as a key muse for the project, as the churches cited in the rhyme stand in close proximity to the new hotel. “The longer, and much less well known, version of the rhyme paints a wonderful picture of the city in the 16th and 17th century,” Littlefair adds. “This influence has been interpreted into the design of the interior, from lighting to materiality.”

Many of the site’s original architectural details were retained, including patterned floors that contrast newly installed elements like a concrete reception desk, patinaed walls, and reflective surfaces. Tactile fabrics—from leather to soft linen—were incorporated along with graphic handtufted rugs that soften the lobby atmosphere with warm colorways of sage gray and dusky blue. The double-height bar on the ground floor animates its concrete surfaces with large-scale artwork, while the rooftop bar is lined with striped and festooned shade structures.

Additional F&B options include Spanish concept BiBo from chef Dani Garcia, all-day café and cocktail bar Christina’s Shoreditch, and a rooftop breakfast venue, Altitude at the Curtain. The Curtain Members’ Club coworking space is slated to debut next month as well.
