Auberge Resorts Collection has debuted its third destination in New England: the Vanderbilt in Newport, Rhode Island. The former mansion, originally built in 1908 for businessman Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, has been transformed into a 33-room luxury resort by Dallas-based Swoon, the Studio.

“In crafting the interiors for the reimagined Vanderbilt, we hinted at the rich history of the mansion and the iconic characters who inhabited its walls through a witty, modern lens to create a property that’s truly unique to Newport,” says Swoon founder Samantha Sano. “The resulting vibe is one of overt style and a relaxed elegance, with the Vanderbilt serving as the destination’s living room.”

Located in the city’s downtown area, the Georgian-style property expertly blends color-rich layers of whimsy that complement an overall cinematic quality. New and vintage furnishings populate the interiors along with a mix of wood elements, dramatic fabrics, custom hand-drawn wallpaper, and a decadent color palette.

Commissioned artwork by photographer and artist Maxine Helfman further enlivens public spaces, the lobby and the Library, with an elegant but approachable ethos. Inspired by heiress Doris Duke, the Library parlor is defined by a rich palette of muted blues and greens, and includes a hidden bar accessible via a secret door sheathed in scenic wallpaper.

In addition to the 1920s-style Dining Room at the Vanderbilt restaurant, onsite F&B and social hubs include the lush Garden Terrace and the Roof Deck overlooking the harbor.
