Austin’s latest cocktail lounge, Codependent, has opened on the ground floor of the Independent condo towers. Locally based Urbanspace Interiors spearheaded the design of the sleek new dive, which balances the sexiness of an upscale lounge with the familiar warmth of a neighborhood coffee shop.

“We wanted to create a gathering place that encourages people to linger as day transitioned to night,” says Urbanspace principal designer Merrill Alley. “The outlines of the concept started with how a space can be two things at once, light against dark, soft velvets and leather in conjunction with metal and stone, easy elegance, and sophisticated comfort. The idea of contrast is how the design really began to take shape.”

Lush greenery and hanging basket chairs welcome guests, beyond which lies a monolithic terrazzo block perched upon a brass base that serves as the coffee bar. A mix of darkly stained white oak, gray mirrors, and brass compose the backbar and support a smooth aesthetic transition through sunset.

Handsome furnishings nod to classic Italian design as they convey a continental sophistication. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame surrounding greenery to instill a treehouse-like ambiance that complements an interior palette of camel, gray, and black. Accents of merlot and sage abound the bathroom balance the drama of marble tile and infinity mirrors in the bathrooms as well.
