HBA San Francisco has completed the design of Elusa Winery in Calistoga, California. Authentically rustic, relaxed, and refined, the facility reinterprets agrarian traditions through a refreshing modern lens.

“Similar to the way good wine is connected to the terroir, the interior architecture of Elusa Winery is expressive of the landscape with touches of site-specific history,” says HBA San Francisco associate Jacob Royster. “With this mindset, we utilized localized materials and local artisans to connect the design of this project to the earth and its surroundings, created with care as the name ‘Elusa’ symbolizes in the native language of the original inhabitants of Napa Valley. The result is a hospitality experience that is contemporary yet also with a communal sense of place.”

Effortlessly sophisticated interiors are lined with warm white hues, natural oak and walnut, and oil-rubbed bronze metals. Neutral fabrics richly infuse texture, while mustard leather accents inject a pop of color into the space. The visitor’s tasting room welcomes patrons with oversized banquettes flanking the entrance below double-height vaulted ceilings supported by white trusses and vertical wood plank walls. Complementary wood millwork permeates warmth in tandem with ebony elements and burgundy leather as well. A suspended copper sculpture serves as a key focal point, amplifying a raw materiality inspired by the earth and wine.

Outside, a shaded lounge is installed beneath a canopy of maple trees, nestled within a curved concrete staircase. Woven and cast stone elements also promote texture.
