The former Coca-Cola bottling factory in downtown Indianapolis has been reborn as the Bottleworks Hotel. The Art Deco landmark was sensitively transformed by international design firm Ratio to accentuate its historic glamour and position the boutique concept for a contemporary audience.

“The ability to add a contemporary layer to it and create a dialogue between new and old is a great challenge and opportunity,” Ratio architecture principal Jeff Milliken. “The unique qualities of the design and the building make the project feel like an authentic piece of the neighborhood and downtown Indianapolis, which it is.”

The redesign reinvigorates the site on Massachusetts Avenue, which has also been refreshed with brick pavers and granite curbs lined with trees to complement the transformation. Among the structure’s preserved elements are thousands of original white terracotta tiles that adorn the façade, as well as original glazed brick and tiles mosaics, balustrades, and gold leaf hand-lettering.

A central roof and floor were removed to establish a new courtyard and maximize garden views from select accommodations, while a third story was added to support a total of 139 guestrooms. Originally designed with open space and durable materials to accommodate a fleet of Coca-Cola delivery trucks, Bottleworks Hotel promotes comfort with a widespread openness. Polished terrazzo floors and tile walls infuse a feeling opulence throughout the interior as well.
