The Fairmont Mayakoba in Mexico’s Riviera Maya has announced the reopening of its newly renovated Hix Bar & Lounge. Redesigned by Mexican studio Room1804 Design, the 3,500-square-foot lobby concept has been relocated and expanded to accommodate a sushi bar and a slew of new furnishings that channel the surrounding natural splendor of the setting.

“We translated the strength of the mangrove into the backdrop of the space. We used a very powerful vegetal decorative paper, which allowed us to bring nature into the interior,” says Room1804 design director Luis Yunta. “We want the guest to feel impacted by a space that speaks of Mexico, a space that welcomes you to the vacation experience that awaits them.”

The original jaguar sculptures found within the bar—“hix” translates to “jaguar” in the Mayan language—were refurbished to honor the previous design against the botanical backdrop. The sculptures inject a black and white motif into the casual indoor-outdoor destination, which also echoes a modern hacienda. Marble is prominently featured to elevate the mood while locally sourced wood infuses warmth along with Asian-style chandeliers. A 1,500-square-foot terrace is attached, overlooking serene water canals, as well.
