Ménard Dworkind Architecture & Design has completed Tiramisu, a contemporary Italian-Japanese eatery in Montreal’s Chinatown. Housed across the ground floor of the Hampton Inn by Hilton Montreal Downtown, the posh new restaurant echoes midcentury modernism with an eclectic materiality conceived to stand out. “We were inspired by the shapes, colors, and materiality of Italy in the 1960s,” says Ménard Dworkind partner and designer Guillaume Ménard. “Being located in the heart of Montreal’s Chinatown, we really wanted Tiramisu to clash with its environment.”

The 3,900-square-foot space amplifies abundant daylighting with a range of chrome and mirrored surfaces. Terrazzo, wood, and velvet also line the interior, which was configured with social distancing in mind. A takeaway pizza counter and a small café entitled MISU flank the entrance, beyond which lies the main dining room and bar.

An elevated asymmetrical bar frames views of Tiramisu and adds a dynamic perspective and movement to the space. The shape of the bar is mirrored by an inverted pyramid suspended from the ceiling and clad with acoustic panels that culminate in four walnut light boxes that illuminate the central back bar. Custom fixtures composed of chromed aluminum and black walnut also cast the bar in warm light, while pendants made from five powdercoated stacked disks establish a unique shadow play across the design as well.
