Six Senses Svart in Norway Goes Off-Grid with First Energy-Positive Project

Stands weightlessly at the foot of the spectacular Svartisen glacier.
Groundbreaking technology makes it the first net energy-positive destination in the world.
Off-grid and carbon neutral with local production and zero waste to landfill.
Technological innovation will provide a blueprint for sustainable development.

BANGKOK – April 27, 2022 – With booming demand for adventurous and eco-conscious travel, northern Norway is one of the last frontiers for a self-sustainable, off-grid destination. The 94-room Six Senses Svart combines a futuristic design and technological innovation with earthy, organic materials that use the least embedded energy. The name Svart, which means black and blue in old Norse, is a reference to the natural heritage of the ancient Svartisen glacier, which lies just within the Arctic Circle, where summer days last forever and winter nights are lit by the breathtaking Northern Lights. To minimize the on-site impact, Six Senses Svart is poised on poles above the crystal-clear waters of the Holandsfjorden fjord, at the base of the glacier itself.

Six Senses Svart aims to inspire guests to "take a beat" and raise awareness of the possibilities of regenerative travel and the importance of the polar region, in partnership with the local community. Inherent in the project is the commitment not to compromise the fragile and pristine glacial surroundings or the property's beauty and quality. The major pillars of the design concept – environment and nature, sustainability, technological innovation, wellness, and mindfulness – are integrated in tandem because they all directly impact each other. The project has been a long time in the planning to make sure all parts of the operation support the vision from the start rather than being bolted on as an afterthought. The result will set a new standard in carbon-neutral travel.

Commenting on the brand's first project in Scandinavia, CEO of Six Senses Neil Jacobs said, "Sustainable properties call for extraordinary creativity, and Six Senses Svart takes us to a whole new level in terms of pushing boundaries. The concept has become bigger than the project itself, as it will provide a futuristic showcase for what can be achieved in terms of sustainability and energy solutions, and therefore a blueprint within our hospitality industry and the development sector in general."

Visionary and optimistic design Taking its cue from the "fiskehjell" (an A-shaped wooden structure for drying fish) and the "rorbu" (a coastal fisherman's cabin), Six Senses Svart will be constructed on poles, dissolving the boundary between land and fjord, ensuring minimal land impact and seabed disruption. The circular form is tactile, creating a feeling of openness and perpetual consciousness of nature as it gives the building a transparent appearance. The happy side effect is its ability to collect energy from the roof and offer panoramic views and privacy with the expanded distance between rooms.

Superior craftsmanship will bring nature inside to form the modern and sustainable Scandic interiors, with corridor space filled with fun and quirky artwork, artifacts, and landscape follies, charting local heritage and creativity to bring a smile to the face.

Pioneering wellness is central to the Six Senses DNA, and this is an opportunity to innovate further, with each guest room becoming a wellness concierge through the Svart Touch concept. Non-invasive touchless technology will adapt the room to the guest's state of mind and health, providing intuitive options to evoke a deeper sense of well-being.

"Building a unique environment through cutting-edge design and superior craftsmanship comes with clear obligations. Creating a sustainable destination through an optimized resort operation requires us to collaborate with the right partner," said Ivaylo Lefterov, Svart Development Director. "Six Senses shares the same ethos and ambition, to redefine bespoke travel through technological innovation, carbon-neutral approach, ground-breaking design, and an exceptional guest journey."

Off-grid and carbon neutral come full circle in the Arctic Circle Six Senses Svart is the first building to be designed and built after the highest energy-efficiency standard in the northern hemisphere. It will harvest enough solar energy to go back into the system, covering the hotel, adjacent operations, boat shuttle, and the energy needed to construct the building – rendering it independent from the power grid. Such energy-positive buildings could deliver 89 percent of the 45 percent decrease in emissions required to reach the scenario where global warming is limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. As such, Six Senses Svart is the northernmost implementation of the Paris Agreement, demonstrating that carbon neutrality can be not only feasible in a sophisticated development at an eco-sensitive site, but can also be profitable.

It will also be self-sustaining, complete with its own waste and water management, recycling, and renewable infrastructure. The team will work with existing sustainable fishing and farming operations and engage local like-minded suppliers for the restaurants and bars.

"To enhance the vision of Svart, we have established a Net Zero Lab, a vehicle for developing and taking to market the technology created by us in a joint effort with Six Senses to reach the common goal for net-zero travel. This means the guest journey will have zero environmental impact from start to end. The mission is to achieve common ground for all stakeholders pushing the technology to the next level to benefit the resort and the industry at large," said Jan-Gunnar Mathisen, CEO of the project's owner and developer.

A state, a trait, a practice, to encourage awareness

The concept of a "stay" will be redefined from a passive or static experience to an immersive and purpose-driven journey. There is a two-way expectation as truly reciprocal wellness and sustainability cut both ways. Guests are welcomed into breathtaking nature to enjoy unplugged exploration and signature standards such as Eat With Six Senses, Sleep With Six Senses and Grow With Six Senses, the brand's edutainment program for younger guests created around the six dimensions of wellness.

Guests can lounge in the Experience Center, where materials will be light and raw, with local fabrics to tie "the space to the place". The Alchemy Bar will highlight the rich history of regional healing techniques by turning local flora and fauna into pampering scents and scrubs. As a center for engagement and innovation, the Earth Lab will serve as the sustainability outreach space, showcasing "lifecycle living" initiatives on and off the property. There will also be a Svart Design Lab, which will act as an incubator for innovation and education, for guests to understand how new technologies can bring the sector closer to carbon neutrality as part of a cradle-to-cradle hospitality offering.

The Marketplace will be the anchor, zero-waste dining venue, where the lines between food storage, prep, and dining are blurred to create an inviting and active environment (whatever isn't eaten fresh from the farm may well get pickled). Six Senses filters and bottles its own drinking water throughout its properties, and Six Senses Svart will offer water and more to the door to reach its plastic-free goals.

Wellness exploration inspired by nature

Wellness at Six Senses is not confined to the four walls of the spa or fitness center. It is part of an integrated experience. It is something that is always present, and nothing that guests have to engage in, if they choose not to. Instead, experts will guide guests on the path to well-being, however far they want to go. From effective fixes from compression boots to vitamin IVs in the biohacking lounge to all-round fitness in the sensory treatment suites. Six Senses Svart will cover the full gambit of integrated wellness, with state-of-the-art equipment and wearable technology assimilation, integrating a specially developed "Svart Touch" concept that will further elevate the brand's pioneering wellness approach.

On summarizing the project's mission, Ivaylo Lefterov said, "Six Senses Svart is redefining the travel experience through technological innovation, ground-breaking design, and exceptional guest wellness journey by creating a carbon-neutral visionary destination where we can showcase the core pillars of what modern hospitality design and operation can achieve."

Six Senses Svart is set to open in 2024.

Metropole Hanoi is praised in the guide as "a supremely beautiful hotel, inside and out."

Metropole Hanoi Awarded Five-Star Rating from Forbes Travel Guide for 3rd Straight Year

HANOI, Vietnam (April 28, 2022) — For the third consecutive year, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has been awarded Forbes Travel Guide's prestigious Five-Star rating—the top level of recognition—in the independent rating agency's assessment of luxury hotels, restaurants and spas.

Forbes Travel Guide describes the Metropole as "Hanoi's grande dame" and praises it as "a supremely beautiful hotel, inside and out. Every corner is a compelling photo opportunity, especially in the gleaming historic wing and all-white inner courtyard."

"Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi draws deeply from a century of stories to weave a rich, nostalgic guest experience in the heart of the Vietnamese capital," the review says. "For those seeking a taste of Old Hanoi, the Metropole's creaky central stairs, polished wood furnishings and elegant rooms are an authentic throwback to another era."

In Vietnam, two hotels earned Five-Star ratings and three received Four-Star ratings for 2022.

Forbes Travel Guide, established in 1958 (then called Mobil Travel Guide), is the oldest travel guide in the United States, and is the creator of the original Five-Star rating system for hotels. The guide's ratings are among the most highly respected in the hotel industry.

The Five-Star rating is meant to designate "outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities."

While Metropole's luxurious accommodation and historic facilities came in for much praise in the 2022 guide, service reigns supreme at Forbes Travel Guide. However beautiful the hotel's 'hardware,' it was its 'software' – its warm, personalized and attentive service both in the hotel and in its award-winning restaurants and spa – that secured the Forbes rating.

Metropole Hanoi's rich history, including its Path of History (and wartime bunker) tour, are also spotlighted in Forbes Travel Guide's review, while afternoon tea at Le Club Bar, coffee at La Terrasse and cocktails at Bamboo Bar are described as experiences that have evolved into "must-do Hanoi traditions."

Moreover, Le Spa du Metropole "is a sublime urban retreat… ensconced in what feels more like an elegant residence than a wellness center," the review adds.

In order to complete their evaluations, inspectors pay their own way and stay anonymously as typical guests for at least two nights. Forbes Travel Guide bills itself as the only independent, global rating agency for luxury hospitality, and says that only 20 percent of all hotels it rates earn a Five-Star rating.

Once again this year, Forbes Travel Guide also recognized Metropole Hanoi with its "Sharecare VERIFIED" badge for completing and maintaining verification on more than 360 global health security standards. Metropole Hanoi was one of three Vietnam hotels to receive this distinction.

The comprehensive assessment covers health and hygiene protocols, cleaning products and procedures, masks and personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilation, management accountability, and health safety communication with guests and employees.

"Health security verification gives you the peace of mind that each hotel is committed to expert-validated best practices for your safety and comfort," Forbes Travel Guide says of the Sharecare VERIFIED badge on its website.

International Consumer Goods Show - Special Edition

Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH

Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 1
60327 Frankfurt am Main

September 2020
International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition bundles consumer goods portfolio of Messe Frankfurt in 2021

The Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld trade fairs will be held as a joint event under the name International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition in Frankfurt am Main from 17 to 20 April 2021 as a one-off. This live event will be supplemented by targeted digital offerings from the Consumer Goods Digital Days. Due to the merger, the new date and the hybrid character of the event, new business-enhancing synergy effects for the entire industry will result under the current pandemic conditions.

The B2B events that have taken place again in recent weeks have proven one thing: trade fairs can be successfully implemented with a comprehensive safety concept. However, the preparation of international trade fairs also includes the fact that exhibitors must now commission trade fair service providers. Around 85 percent of exhibitors at Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld come to Frankfurt from abroad.

"From large sections of the international consumer goods industry, there is a desire to hold Ambiente, Christmasworld, Creativeworld and Paperworld 2021. Many companies hope that their presence at the fair will give their business a boost after the re-start of the economy. We feel more committed than ever to this necessity", explains Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

Due to the continuing travel restrictions for international travelers, a later date in April 2021 offers exhibitors greater planning safety. Messe Frankfurt has therefore decided to implement a one-off reorganisation of the consumer goods events in spring for the year 2021. Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld will be held jointly under the name of the International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition in Frankfurt am Main from 17 to 20 April 2021. For the first time, this new live trade fair will be flanked by the digital offerings of the Consumer Goods Digital Days.

The purely digital offerings of Creativeworld will also be on display here, which will not be held as a live event in 2021. "The trend-oriented order cycles of the consumer goods industry require an annual event at the beginning of the year. The merging of Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld at the new time under the name of International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition offers all participants the opportunity for business meetings, ordering and networking in Frankfurt and is the best answer to the current challenges", explains Stephan Kurzawski, member of the Management of Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH.

Consumer Goods Digital Days as a guarantee for greater reach

Also new in 2021 are the expanded digital offerings, which will be held for the first time and concurrently with the live trade fair under the name Consumer Goods Digital Days. Building on the pillars of matchmaking, live streaming and knowledge transfer, as well as Nextrade, exhibitors and visitors alike will have the opportunity to network, find inspiration and place orders directly parallel to and beyond the presence event. Kurzawski explains:

"With our new digital offering, we offer exhibitors and buyers onsite and online the best prerequisites for achieving their sales, marketing and thus their corporate goals. It is an investment that we are making in the conviction that we will continue to be the best partner for business encounters in the future".

With Nextrade, the course for digital additions for trade fairs was already set before the current corona pandemic. The B2B marketplace for the home and living industry has been suporting all year round as a 24/7 order platform consumer goods fairs since 2019. On the occasion of the International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition, virtual showrooms for the product segments of Ambiente, Christmasworld and Creativeworld will be added to the range.

The International Consumer Goods Show – Special Edition and the Consumer Goods Digital Days will take place from April 17 - 20, 2021 in Frankfurt am Main.

50th edition: Heimtextil celebrates half a century as a leading trade fair

50th edition: Heimtextil celebrates half a century as a leading trade fair Heimtextil celebrates its anniversary: from 7-10 January 2020, the global home textiles industry will meet for the 50th time in Frankfurt am Main. With a great anniversary party, a showcase presenting design classics from the past few decades, an anniversary film and other activities, Heimtextil will review the past half century since its first edition in 1971.

‘50 editions over the course of the past five decades are a rarely experienced phenomenon in the fast-moving global trade fair industry and are practically an eternity’, says Detlef Braun, CEO of Messe Frankfurt. ‘Like no other trade fair, Heimtextil stands for product variety, international clout and undisputed market leadership in the textile sector’.

As a design show, it constantly reinvents itself, continues to present state-of-the-art home trends as it has always done and makes the furnishing trends of tomorrow tangible’.

Big celebration party on the Wednesday of the trade fair Messe Frankfurt will be inviting exhibitors and visitors to the highlight of the celebrations, the big Heimtextil @ Night party in hall 11.1 on Wednesday, 8 January 2020. Heimtextil exhibitors from the very beginning will be warmly welcomed and paid special attention. As part of the celebrations, Messe Frankfurt will present an anniversary film with a look back at earlier Heimtextil editions as well as music acts from the last five decades.

Heimtextil International Trade Fair for Home and Contract Textiles

Frankfurt am Main, 7-10 January 2020

In hall 9.0, Heimtextil will present design classics from the past 50 years in a special showcase area. Here, the trade fair will invite people to take a journey through time and a tour of discovery through five decades of Heimtextil history. The presentation is based on editorials from interior magazines. Four rooms incorporate colours, shapes, furniture and design objects from past decades. The showcase is complemented by a café that will be realized in cooperation with Schöner Wohnen, Europe's largest living magazine.

Exclusive offer: anniversary scarf in the Heimtextil look To mark the anniversary, Heimtextil will launch a textile accessory of its own creation: a scarf in the look of the current trade fair campaign. The scarf in the unisex colour combination of petrol, turquoise and lilac will be available for exhibitors and visitors to buy during the trade fair.
